Names to Nicknames (Respectively Ordered)

First, I was Cole

then I became Cher,

Her little sack ‘a puhtaytuhs.

First I was Cole,

then I became Cola,

my Father’s Bubba.

First I was Cole

then I became Coley Oley Oley,

Mama’s infinitely expanding Roley Poley Oley.

First I was Cole,

then I became Mole,

Mecca’s best mate, (Halo at Brandon’s).

First I was Cole,

then I became Chaos,

Darcie’s Umbral Knight; her tween scion…

of her battle, for her husband, that Aidan be her memory.

(I grieve)

First I was Cole,

then I became Lil Moco,

(Bats in the Cave), blurred line

between gringo and chingon.

First I was Cole,

then I was Gatero!

Line yelling from the line,

Walter’s crash test dummy

(my first encounter with contact sport,

being laid out by an ex-NFL

pulling tackle)

and then I was Concussion

and Gout, and Troy from Highschool Musical even

though I was only one black

shadow of a Lower-Depths legion

called running crew.

First I was Cole

and then I was Gat-Man,

“Seal the hatch, the Hunt!

(sound the horn),” Goepel’s

Mammon with dreams of one day

becoming my own Mamet, dreams of

UCLA

but now I use the double XL

Bruin’s crew-neck as a cum rag

and wear Maroon & Gold from

another LA. No Trojan, just

Wolf Pack

and First I was Cole

then I became L.A. – Mundo

Number 1, fraternal order awarded

title, pledge rank: five,

then I became Loyola’s Flanker,

numbers Seven, Eight, and Nine

and now I am still creole

but older now

and more aware of intricacies

so then I became Cabron and “coledout,”

almost Cole Doubt, depending

on how you read it

so I defined myself and then I

became Coal with an A standing

for “Assertive” or “Ablaze,”

how I teach myself to use my

rage…

how I invent myself,

distinguishing name from nick-name

(in respective order).
